Where Do Doctors Live in Seattle? Neighborhoods by Hospital

Relocating to Seattle: Your Step-by-Step Guide for Out-of-State Buyers

Where do doctors live in Seattle?

Most Seattle-area physicians choose a neighborhood based on their primary hospital and their call schedule, not the city as a whole. Doctors at UW Medical Center often look at Northeast Seattle and North Seattle, First Hill physicians at Harborview, Swedish, and Virginia Mason look at Capitol Hill, Madison Valley, and Beacon Hill, and Eastside physicians at EvergreenHealth and Overlake look at Kirkland, Bothell, Kenmore, Redmond, and Bellevue.

The first question I ask every relocating physician is not about bedrooms or budget. It is “Which hospital, and what does your call look like?”

Greater Seattle is a region of lakes, bridges, and bottlenecks. Two homes that look 10 miles apart on a map can mean a 15-minute drive or a 50-minute one, depending on whether you cross Lake Washington or merge onto I-5 at shift change. Choosing your neighborhood by hospital first saves you from learning that the hard way.

Seattle core: UW Montlake and the First Hill hospitals

UW Medical Center, Montlake campus

UW Medical Center sits on Portage Bay next to the University of Washington. Its biggest advantage is transit: the Link light rail 1 Line stops at UW Station, connecting Roosevelt, Northgate, and points north to the hospital without a car.

Neighborhoods to consider: Montlake, Laurelhurst, Ravenna, Roosevelt, Wallingford, and Wedgwood. Physicians who want more space often ride light rail in from Shoreline or drive from Lake Forest Park.

Harborview, Swedish First Hill, and Virginia Mason

Three major hospitals cluster on First Hill, including Harborview, the region’s Level I trauma center. For trauma, surgery, and anesthesia schedules, a short drive or walk matters.

Neighborhoods to consider: Capitol Hill, First Hill, Madison Valley, Madrona, Leschi, Beacon Hill, and Queen Anne. Mercer Island is a common choice for physicians who want a quieter setting with direct I-90 access.

Fred Hutch and South Lake Union

Research and oncology physicians at Fred Hutch often look at Eastlake, Queen Anne, Fremont, and Wallingford, all close enough to make a bike commute realistic.

North Seattle and the Northshore

This is where I live and work, and it is one of the most practical areas for physicians who want space without a bridge commute.

UW Medical Center, Northwest campus

UW Medical Center Northwest is a full-service hospital in North Seattle, just off I-5 near North 115th Street. Neighborhoods to consider: Greenwood, Northgate, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, and Edmonds, with Bothell and Kenmore an easy reach along SR 522 and I-405.

Seattle Children’s

Seattle Children’s is in Laurelhurst on Sand Point Way. Pediatric physicians often look at Laurelhurst, View Ridge, Wedgwood, Lake Forest Park, and Kenmore, where the Burke-Gilman Trail and the Kenmore waterfront are part of everyday life. My guide to Kenmore neighborhoods near the Burke-Gilman Trail goes deeper.

Swedish Ballard and Swedish Edmonds

Swedish operates campuses in Ballard and Edmonds as well as First Hill and Cherry Hill. Ballard physicians tend to look at Ballard, Phinney Ridge, Greenwood, and Magnolia. Edmonds physicians often stay close in Edmonds, Shoreline, Lynnwood, and Mill Creek.

The Eastside: EvergreenHealth, Overlake, and Swedish Issaquah

Kirkland waterfront on Lake Washington near EvergreenHealth, a popular area for Eastside physicians

If you will practice on the Eastside, living in Seattle and commuting across the lake is the choice I see physicians regret most often.

EvergreenHealth Medical Center, Kirkland

EvergreenHealth sits in the Totem Lake area of Kirkland, near I-405. Neighborhoods to consider: Kirkland’s Juanita and Finn Hill, Bothell, Kenmore, Woodinville, and North Redmond. Physicians here get Lake Washington access, the Cross Kirkland Corridor, and the Woodinville wine district within a short drive. These areas are served by the Northshore School District and the Lake Washington School District.

Overlake Medical Center, Bellevue

Overlake is in central Bellevue. Neighborhoods to consider: Bellevue, Kirkland’s Houghton and Lakeview, Redmond, Issaquah, and Sammamish, with Mercer Island an option via I-90.

Swedish Issaquah

The Swedish Issaquah campus serves the I-90 corridor. Physicians often look at Issaquah Highlands, Sammamish, and Snoqualmie Ridge for mountain access and newer homes.

South and North King County edges

Valley Medical Center in Renton, part of UW Medicine, draws physicians to Renton Highlands, Newcastle, and Maple Valley. Providence Regional Medical Center Everett draws physicians to Mill Creek, Snohomish, and Mukilteo. My Mill Creek guide covers that area in detail.

How to choose between two good options

When a physician is torn between neighborhoods, I use three tests:

  1. Drive it at your real shift times. Test the commute at 6:15 a.m. and again at 7:30 p.m., not at noon on a Saturday.
  2. Plan for your partner’s commute too. If one of you works at UW and the other in Redmond or Bellevue, a Northshore location like Bothell or Kenmore can split the difference.
  3. Decide what call distance you need. Some programs expect you within a set response time while on call. Confirm it before you fall in love with a house.

If you are still in training, my post on whether to buy a house during residency covers the rent-or-buy side of this decision.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best neighborhood for doctors working at UW Medical Center? Physicians at the Montlake campus often choose Northeast Seattle neighborhoods like Ravenna, Laurelhurst, Roosevelt, and Wedgwood, or Shoreline for more space with a light rail connection. The right choice depends on your call schedule and whether you want to drive.

Can I live on the Eastside and work at a Seattle hospital? Yes, but cross-lake commutes on SR 520 and I-90 vary widely at shift change. Northshore communities like Bothell and Kenmore, which reach Seattle via SR 522 and I-405, are often a practical middle ground.

Where do doctors live near EvergreenHealth in Kirkland? Physicians there often choose Kirkland’s Juanita and Finn Hill neighborhoods, Bothell, Kenmore, and Woodinville, all within a short drive along I-405 and NE 124th Street.

Your next step

The best place for doctors to live in Seattle is the one that fits your hospital, your call schedule, and your household, in that order. Start with the hospital and the rest of the search gets much clearer.
